Your PMP Doesn't Last Forever — Here's How to Keep It

Congratulations on passing the PMP exam. Now here's the part many new credential holders overlook: your PMP certification expires in three years unless you earn and report 60 Professional Development Units (PDUs). This isn't optional, and the clock starts ticking from the day you pass the exam.

The good news is that earning PDUs is manageable once you understand the system. The bad news is that many PMP holders procrastinate and end up scrambling in year three. This guide ensures you won't be one of them.

Understanding PDU Categories

PMI divides PDUs into two broad categories, and you need a minimum from each:

Education PDUs (minimum 35)

• Volunteering for PMI chapters or other PM organizations
• Mentoring other project managers
• Working as a practitioner (up to 8 PDUs per cycle for simply doing PM work)

How to Earn Education PDUs

You have more options than you might think. Here are the most practical approaches:

Free Options

1. PMI webinars and online courses: PMI offers free webinars to members that qualify for PDUs. Check the Events section of pmi.org regularly.
2. ProjectManagement.com: PMI's online community hosts webinars, articles, and resources that qualify for PDUs at no cost.
3. Chapter events: Local PMI chapter meetings and presentations typically award 1-2 PDUs per event.
4. Podcasts and blogs: Self-directed learning from qualifying sources can be claimed under the Education category.

Paid Options

1. Online courses: LinkedIn Learning, Coursera, Udemy, and other platforms offer PMI-accredited courses.
2. Conferences: PMI Global Conference and regional events offer large PDU packages (often 15-20+ PDUs).
3. Formal education: University courses in project management, business, or related fields qualify.
4. Certification prep: Studying for additional certifications (PMI-ACP, PgMP) also earns PDUs.

How to Report PDUs

All PDU reporting happens through PMI's Continuing Certification Requirements (CCR) system:

1. Log in to pmi.org and navigate to your certification dashboard
2. Click "Report PDUs" and select the appropriate category
3. Enter the activity details: provider, topic, date, and number of PDUs
4. Submit — most self-reported PDUs are accepted immediately

Keep documentation of all learning activities. PMI conducts random audits, and you'll need to provide evidence (certificates of completion, event registrations, or other proof) if selected.

A Three-Year PDU Strategy

Don't wait until year three. Spread your PDU earning across the full cycle:

• Year 1: Earn 20 PDUs — focus on one Talent Triangle area and attend a few chapter events
• Year 2: Earn 20 PDUs — focus on a second Talent Triangle area, add Giving Back activities
• Year 3: Earn 20 PDUs — fill in gaps, ensure minimums are met in all categories

This averages to roughly 1-2 PDUs per month, which is entirely achievable by attending one webinar or reading one qualifying article every few weeks.

What Happens If You Don't Renew

If you fail to earn 60 PDUs and pay the renewal fee by your certification expiration date, your PMP status moves to "suspended." You have up to 12 months to complete the requirements. After that, your certification is revoked, and you'd need to retake the exam.
