The PMP exam has evolved beyond process mechanics to test your understanding of value delivery. PMI's emphasis on benefits realization means that project success is no longer defined solely by on-time, on-budget delivery — it is measured by the value the project creates for stakeholders and customers. Net Promoter Score Basics

NPS measures customer loyalty and satisfaction with a single question: "On a scale of 0 to 10, how likely are you to recommend this product/service to a colleague or friend?" Based on their response, customers are classified into three groups:

Unlike NPS, which measures overall loyalty, CSAT measures satisfaction with a particular touchpoint. In project management, CSAT can be applied to individual deliverables, sprint reviews, or project milestones.

Customer Effort Score (CES)

CES measures how easy it was for the customer to accomplish a goal using the project's deliverable. A low-effort experience correlates with higher satisfaction and adoption. For projects delivering software or processes, CES is a valuable usability metric.

Defect Rates and Quality Metrics

While not customer surveys, quality metrics serve as indirect satisfaction indicators. High defect rates correlate with low satisfaction. PMI ties quality management directly to customer satisfaction through the principle that quality means conformance to requirements and fitness for use.

Integrating Satisfaction Metrics into Project Management

Effective satisfaction measurement follows a project lifecycle approach:

  1. Planning — Define which satisfaction metrics will be used, how they will be collected, and what targets constitute success. Document this in the quality management plan or benefits management plan.
  2. Execution — For iterative projects, collect satisfaction data after each iteration or release. This enables real-time course correction.
  3. Closing — Conduct a formal satisfaction assessment as part of project closure. Compare results against targets established during planning.
  4. Post-project — Continue tracking satisfaction during the benefits realization period. Some benefits take months to materialize after project delivery.

PMP Exam Applications

Watch for these exam scenarios:

  • "The project deliverable has been accepted but stakeholders are dissatisfied" — This tests whether you recognize that formal acceptance and satisfaction are different things. Satisfaction measurement is needed beyond scope verification.
  • "How should the PM measure project success?" — Look for answers that include customer satisfaction alongside traditional constraint metrics.
  • "The organization wants to improve future projects" — Customer satisfaction data becomes part of lessons learned and organizational process assets.

Connecting to Agile

Agile methodologies embed customer satisfaction feedback loops into every iteration. Sprint reviews solicit stakeholder feedback. Retrospectives assess team and process satisfaction. This continuous feedback model aligns with PMI's agile emphasis and is frequently tested on the PMP exam.
