What Are Drag-and-Drop Questions?

The PMP exam includes several question formats beyond traditional multiple choice. Drag-and-drop questions present you with items on one side and categories, sequences, or positions on the other. You physically drag items into place to demonstrate your understanding. These questions test knowledge differently than multiple choice — they require you to organize, categorize, or sequence information rather than simply select an answer.

Drag-and-drop questions are not more difficult than multiple choice, but they can feel unfamiliar if you have not practiced them. Understanding the common formats and developing a systematic approach eliminates the surprise factor on exam day.

Common Drag-and-Drop Formats

Matching

You are given items in one column and categories or definitions in another. Your task is to match them correctly. Examples:

• Match conflict resolution techniques to their descriptions
• Match risk response strategies to example scenarios
• Match contract types to their risk characteristics
• Match leadership styles to described situations

Sequencing

You are given a set of activities or processes and must arrange them in the correct order. Examples:

• Arrange the scope management processes in order
• Sequence the steps of the change control process
• Order the team development stages (Tuckman model)
• Arrange project phases for a specific methodology

Categorization

You are given items and must sort them into the correct categories. Examples:

• Sort items into the correct process group (initiating, planning, executing, etc.)
• Categorize tools as belonging to specific knowledge areas
• Sort risks as threats or opportunities
• Categorize stakeholders using a power/interest grid

Strategy 1: Start with What You Know

Do not try to solve the entire question at once. Begin by placing the items you are most confident about. This reduces the remaining options and often makes uncertain items easier to place through elimination.

For matching questions, look for unique keywords in the descriptions that directly connect to specific items. For sequencing, identify the definite first and last items, then work inward.

Strategy 2: Use Process of Elimination

Just like multiple choice, elimination is powerful. If you know that item A definitely belongs in category X, then item A cannot be in any other category. This narrows options for remaining items and makes the question progressively easier to solve.

Strategy 3: Check Your Work

Drag-and-drop questions allow you to review and adjust before submitting. After placing all items, read through each placement and ask: "Does this make sense?" A quick review catches careless errors that would cost points.

Strategy 4: Know Your Sequences Cold

Sequencing questions reward candidates who have internalized process flows. Focus your study on:

• The order of processes within each knowledge area
• The sequence of activities in change management
• The flow from initiating through closing
• Risk management process order
• Procurement lifecycle stages

Strategy 5: Practice the Format
