PMP Eligibility Requirements: Hours, Education, Experience

Do You Qualify for the PMP Exam?

Before you can sit for the PMP exam, you must meet PMI's eligibility criteria. These requirements exist to ensure that PMP candidates have genuine project management experience — not just theoretical knowledge. Understanding exactly what's required (and what counts) saves you time and prevents application headaches.

The Two Eligibility Paths

PMI offers two paths to PMP eligibility, based on your education level:

Path 1: Four-Year Degree

• A bachelor's degree or global equivalent
• 36 months of experience leading and directing projects
• 35 contact hours of project management education

Path 2: Secondary Degree

• A high school diploma, associate's degree, or global equivalent
• 60 months of experience leading and directing projects
• 35 contact hours of project management education

Your degree doesn't need to be in project management or any specific field. An engineering degree, a business degree, or an arts degree all satisfy the education component equally.

Defining "Leading and Directing Projects"

This is where many applicants get confused. PMI doesn't just want project experience — they want evidence that you led and directed the work. Specifically, they're looking for experience in tasks described in the PMP Examination Content Outline (ECO) across the three domains: People, Process, and Business Environment.

Activities that count include:

• Managing project scope, schedule, cost, quality, resources, communications, risk, procurement, or stakeholders
• Leading project teams and making decisions about project direction
• Coordinating between stakeholders and team members
• Reporting project status and managing escalations
• Applying agile, waterfall, or hybrid methodologies to deliver project outcomes

Activities that typically don't count include: being a team member without leadership responsibilities, performing routine operational work, or managing only your own individual tasks.

Non-Overlapping Months

An important detail: PMI counts months, not hours. If you led Project A from January to June and Project B from March to August, that's 8 months of experience — not 12. Overlapping months are counted once.

The 35 Contact Hours Requirement

You need 35 hours of project management education covering topics related to the three PMP exam domains. This can come from:

• PMI Authorized Training Partners (ATPs): Formal PMP prep courses that guarantee the hours count
• University courses: College-level project management courses
• Online learning platforms: Many offer PMI-recognized PM courses
• Employer-provided training: Internal PM training programs, if they cover qualifying content

Self-study does not count toward contact hours. You need structured instruction from a qualifying source. Keep certificates of completion — you'll need them if audited.

Filling Out the Application

The PMP application asks you to document your project experience in detail. For each project, you'll provide:

1. The project title and a brief description
2. Your role and the organization
3. Start and end dates
4. Hours spent leading and directing the project
5. A description of your responsibilities mapped to the ECO domains
6. A contact person who can verify your experience

Aim for clear, specific descriptions. Instead of "managed a software project," write "led a 12-person cross-functional team through design, development, and deployment of an enterprise CRM system, managing a $500K budget and 9-month timeline."

The Audit Process

Approximately 10-20% of PMP applications are selected for random audit. If audited, you'll need to provide:

• Copies of your education credentials (diplomas, transcripts)
• Certificates for your 35 contact hours of PM education
• Signed verification from the contacts you listed for your project experience

Being audited isn't a sign that anything is wrong — it's random. However, it does add 2-4 weeks to your timeline, so factor that into your planning.

Common Eligibility Questions

Does my experience need to be consecutive? No. You can accumulate experience across multiple jobs and time periods within the past eight years.

Does volunteer project management count? Yes, as long as you genuinely led and directed the project work.

I have the experience but no formal PM title. Can I still apply? Absolutely. PMI evaluates your actual responsibilities, not your job title. Many PMP holders come from roles titled team lead, coordinator, analyst, or engineer where they performed project management functions.
