The Study Plan That Respects Your Life

Most PMP candidates are working professionals with jobs, families, and responsibilities that don't pause for exam prep. The 90-day balanced plan is designed for real life — it spreads approximately 180–200 study hours across three months at a pace that's challenging but sustainable.

You'll study roughly 10–15 hours per week, primarily on evenings and weekends, with built-in recovery days to prevent burnout.

Before You Start: Setup Week

Before day one, complete these tasks:

  1. Submit your PMP application to PMI (allow 5–10 business days for approval)
  2. Complete your 35 contact hours if you haven't already
  3. Choose your prep resources: A primary course or platform (like PMPprep), the Agile Practice Guide, and an exam simulator
  4. Block study times on your calendar for the full 90 days
  5. Tell your family/partner about your commitment — their support matters

Month 1: Building the Foundation (Days 1–30)

Week 1: Orientation and Assessment

Monday–Wednesday (1.5 hrs/day): Review the ECO, understand the exam format, familiarize yourself with your study platform.
Thursday (2 hrs): Take a diagnostic practice exam. Record your scores by domain.
Saturday (3 hrs): Analyze results, create your personalized study priority list, begin People domain content.
Sunday (2 hrs): Continue People domain — leadership styles and team development.

Weekly total: ~11 hours

Weeks 2–3: People Domain

Weekday evenings (1–1.5 hrs, 4 nights/week): Study one People domain topic per session — conflict management, stakeholder engagement, communication, motivation theories, emotional intelligence, virtual teams.
Saturday (3 hrs): Practice questions on the week's topics (40–50 questions) with thorough review.
Sunday (2 hrs): Review wrong answers, update notes, light reading on upcoming topics.

Weekly total: ~11–12 hours

Week 4: People Domain Wrap-Up

Weekday evenings: Finish remaining People topics and begin Process domain overview.
Weekend: Take a 60-question People domain practice quiz. Review and address any remaining gaps.

Month 2: Core Content Mastery (Days 31–60)

Weeks 5–7: Process Domain

The Process domain is the largest content area at 50% of the exam. Give it three full weeks:

  • Week 5: Project planning — scope, schedule, cost, and quality planning. Both predictive and agile planning approaches.
  • Week 6: Project execution and delivery — managing teams, quality assurance, procurement, communications during execution.
  • Week 7: Monitoring, controlling, and closing — earned value management, change control, risk monitoring, project closure and lessons learned.

Each week follows the same pattern: weeknight content study, weekend practice questions and review.

Week 8: Business Environment and Agile Deep Dive

Weekday evenings: Business Environment domain (benefits realization, compliance, organizational change) plus agile/hybrid deep dive (Scrum, Kanban, agile scaling, hybrid project management).
Saturday (4 hrs): First full-length 180-question practice exam under timed conditions.
Sunday (3 hrs): Thorough review of practice exam results.

Month 3: Practice and Polish (Days 61–90)

Week 9: Gap Analysis and Targeted Review

Based on your first full practice exam, identify your top 3–5 weak areas. Spend this week exclusively on those topics. Take targeted quizzes (20–30 questions) on each weak area daily.

Week 10: Second and Third Full Practice Exams

Wednesday evening or Saturday: Full practice exam #2. Target 70%+.
Next day: Thorough review.
Remaining days: Address new gaps identified. Take practice exam #3 by end of week. Target 72%+.

Week 11: Final Practice and Refinement

Early in the week: Practice exam #4. Target 75%+.
Mid-week: Final targeted review of persistent weak areas.
Thursday: Practice your brain dump (formulas, key frameworks).
Friday onward: Begin tapering. Light review only — notes, cheat sheets, flashcards.

Week 12: Exam Week

Monday–Tuesday: Very light review. Skim notes. Do 10–20 easy practice questions for confidence.
Wednesday: No studying. Handle exam logistics (testing center details, online setup, ID preparation).
Thursday: No studying. Relax, exercise, eat well, sleep early.
Friday (or your chosen exam day): Take the exam.

Tips for Staying on Track Over 90 Days

  • Protect your study times like meetings. Block them on your work and personal calendars.
  • Build in "catch-up" flexibility. If you miss a session, use Sunday evening to make it up rather than falling behind.
  • Track your hours and scores. Use PMPprep's progress tracking or a simple spreadsheet. Visible progress is motivating.
  • Take one full day off per week. Mental recovery isn't optional for a 90-day plan.
  • Find an accountability partner. A colleague also studying for the PMP, or even a friend who checks in on your progress weekly.

What If You Fall Behind?

Life happens. If you fall more than a week behind, don't panic — adjust. You have two options:

  1. Compress remaining content by increasing weekend study hours for 2–3 weeks
  2. Extend the timeline by 2–3 weeks and reschedule your exam

Option 2 is almost always the better choice. Cramming at the end undermines the steady knowledge-building this plan is designed for.
