Quantitative Risk Analysis: Numerical Precision
Quantitative risk analysis assigns numerical values to risks and models their combined effect on project objectives. It is more rigorous, more time-consuming, and not performed on every project — typically only on large, complex, or high-stakes initiatives.

- Produces numerical estimates — probability distributions, expected monetary values, or confidence intervals for schedule and cost targets.
- Requires data and modeling tools — spreadsheet simulations at minimum, dedicated software for complex models.
- Analyzes the combined effect of multiple risks on the overall project, not individual risks in isolation.
Tools and Techniques
- Monte Carlo Simulation: Runs thousands of iterations with varying risk parameters to produce probability distributions for project outcomes.
- Decision Tree Analysis: Models sequential decisions and chance events to calculate expected monetary values for different strategies.
- Sensitivity Analysis: Uses tornado diagrams to identify which risks have the greatest impact on a specific objective.
- Expected Monetary Value (EMV): Multiplies probability by impact for each risk to produce a weighted average outcome.
