What to Expect at the Pearson VUE Testing Center for Your PMP Exam

Demystifying the Testing Center Experience

If you've chosen to take your PMP exam at a Pearson VUE testing center rather than online, knowing exactly what to expect removes one more variable from an already stressful day. This walkthrough covers every step from parking lot to final score, so nothing catches you off guard.

Before You Arrive

What to Bring

• Two forms of valid ID — your primary ID must be government-issued with your photo and signature (driver's license, passport). The secondary can be a credit card, bank card, or another form of ID with your signature.
• Your confirmation email (on your phone is fine — you won't bring it into the testing room, but it's useful for check-in reference)

What NOT to Bring

Leave everything else in your car or at home. You cannot bring into the testing room:

• Phone, smartwatch, or any electronic device
• Notes, books, or study materials
• Food or drinks (water included)
• Wallet, keys, or bag (these go in a locker)
• Jacket or hoodie with large pockets (some centers may ask you to remove them)

Arrival and Check-In

Plan to arrive 30 minutes before your scheduled time. Here's what happens:

1. Sign in at the front desk. The administrator will verify your identity against your IDs.
2. Photo and palm vein scan — Pearson VUE captures biometric data for security. Your photo will appear on your score report.
3. Store your belongings in an assigned locker. You'll keep only the locker key and your IDs.
4. Receive your writing materials — typically a laminated notesheet and a marker (or a small dry-erase board). Some centers use scratch paper. Ask for extras if you need more space for your brain dump.
5. Walk to your testing station. The administrator escorts you to your assigned computer.

The Testing Room

The testing room is a quiet, monitored environment shared with other test-takers (who may be taking entirely different exams). Here's what you'll find:

• Computer with monitor: The exam software will be loaded and ready
• Headphones or earplugs: Available on request — highly recommended even if the room seems quiet. Keyboard clicks and other minor noises can be distracting during a 4-hour exam.
• Camera monitoring: The room is under constant video surveillance
• No personal items at your station — only the provided writing materials

Starting the Exam

Before the actual PMP questions begin, you'll see:

1. A non-disclosure agreement you must accept
2. A brief tutorial on how to use the exam software (navigation, flagging questions, calculator). Even if you've used exam simulators, take 2 minutes to review this — the interface may differ slightly.
3. Your exam timer starts when you begin the first question

This is also when you should do your brain dump on the provided notesheet. Write down formulas, frameworks, and anything you've memorized before you see the first question.

During the Exam

Breaks

You get two optional 10-minute breaks — one after question 60 and another after question 120. The break timer appears on screen. Your exam time does NOT count down during breaks.

During breaks you can:

• Visit the restroom
• Access your locker for a snack or drink (consumed outside the testing room)
• Stretch and walk around the center's common area

You'll need to check back in (palm vein scan) when returning from each break.

If You Need Help

Raise your hand. A proctor will come to you. They can help with technical issues (frozen screen, unresponsive mouse) but cannot help with exam content. If you need more writing materials, they can provide them.

Rules During the Exam

• No talking or making noise
• No looking at other screens
• No accessing any materials other than the provided notesheet
• No using your phone (it's in the locker anyway)
• No leaving the testing room without raising your hand and being escorted

After the Exam

When you submit your final answer (or time expires), you'll see a brief survey about your testing experience. After completing it, your preliminary result appears on screen: Pass or Fail. This is not your detailed score — that comes via email within 1–3 business days.

Return your writing materials to the administrator, collect your belongings from the locker, and sign out. That's it. You're done.

Tips for a Smooth Testing Center Experience

1. Visit the center beforehand if possible. Know the route, parking situation, and building entrance.
2. Dress in layers. Testing rooms tend to be cold. You can remove a sweater but you can't put one on if it's in your locker.
3. Request earplugs or headphones even if the room seems quiet. Other test-takers may arrive or leave during your exam.
4. Ask for extra notesheets at check-in. Better to have them and not need them.
5. Leave your phone in the car, not the locker. One less thing to worry about.
