Benefits & Value

Benefits Realization
The process of ensuring that project outcomes deliver the expected benefits to the organization, tracked from project initiation through post-project assessment.
Business Case
A documented economic feasibility study that establishes the validity of the benefits to be delivered by a project and serves as the basis for authorization.
Benefits Management Plan
A document that describes how and when the project benefits will be delivered and the mechanisms for measuring those benefits.
Value Delivery System
A collection of strategic activities aimed at building, sustaining, and/or advancing an organization. Projects are part of the value delivery system.
Return on Investment (ROI)
A financial metric measuring the profitability of an investment: (Net Profit / Cost of Investment) × 100.
Net Present Value (NPV)
The difference between the present value of cash inflows and outflows over time. A positive NPV indicates a profitable project.
Internal Rate of Return (IRR)
The discount rate that makes the NPV of all cash flows equal to zero. Higher IRR is generally better.
Payback Period
The time required to recover the initial investment. Shorter payback periods carry less risk.

Organizational Change

Organizational Change Management (OCM)
A structured approach to transitioning individuals, teams, and organizations from a current state to a desired future state.
Change Readiness Assessment
An evaluation of an organization's ability and willingness to adopt and sustain change.
Change Agent
An individual who influences and supports organizational change. Project managers often serve as change agents.
Resistance to Change
The opposition or reluctance of stakeholders to accept and adopt changes resulting from the project.
Organizational Culture
The shared values, beliefs, norms, and behaviors that characterize an organization and influence how work gets done.
Organizational Structure
The framework defining how activities like task allocation, coordination, and supervision are directed toward organizational goals. Types include functional, matrix, and projectized.

Compliance & Governance

Compliance
Adherence to laws, regulations, standards, and organizational policies applicable to the project.
Governance
The framework, functions, and processes that guide project management activities to create a unique product, service, or result.
Phase Gate
A review point at the end of a project phase where a decision is made to continue, modify, or terminate the project.
Audit
A structured, independent process used to determine if project activities comply with organizational and project policies, processes, and procedures.
Regulation
A requirement imposed by a governmental body. Compliance with regulations is mandatory.
Standard
A document established by consensus and approved by a recognized body that provides rules, guidelines, or characteristics for activities or their results. Compliance is often voluntary.

Strategic Alignment

Portfolio
A collection of projects, programs, subsidiary portfolios, and operations managed as a group to achieve strategic objectives.
Program
Related projects, subsidiary programs, and program activities managed in a coordinated manner to obtain benefits not available from managing them individually.
Organizational Project Management (OPM)
A strategic execution framework utilizing project, program, and portfolio management to deliver organizational strategy.
Strategic Alignment
Ensuring project objectives support organizational goals and strategy. Projects that lose strategic alignment may need to be terminated.
Project Selection Methods
Techniques for choosing which projects to undertake, including benefit measurement (scoring, NPV, IRR, payback) and constrained optimization (linear programming, multi-objective programming).
