Communication Models

Effective communication is critical to project success. The PMP exam tests your understanding of how communication works and how to manage it effectively.

Basic Communication Model

Sender → Encode → Message → Medium → Decode → Receiver → Feedback

• Encode — Sender translates thoughts into a transmittable form
• Decode — Receiver translates the message back into meaning
• Noise — Anything that interferes with understanding (language barriers, jargon, distractions, cultural differences)
• Acknowledge — Confirms receipt of the message (not understanding)
• Feedback/Response — Confirms understanding of the message

Communication Methods on the PMP

• Interactive — Most effective. Real-time, two-way. Meetings, phone calls, video conferences.
• Push — One-way to specific recipients. Emails, memos, letters, reports.
• Pull — Available for recipients to access. Intranet, knowledge base, shared drives.
