Organizational Change Management Deep Dive
Complete guide to organizational change management for the PMP exam — change readiness, resistance, culture, and transition planning.
Organizational Change Management
Every project creates change, and that change must be managed. Organizational Change Management (OCM) is the structured approach to transitioning individuals, teams, and organizations from their current state to a desired future state.
Why OCM Matters on the PMP
A project can deliver a perfect product and still fail if the organization doesn't adopt it. The PMP exam tests your understanding that:
- Technical delivery is only half the battle
- People must be prepared for and supported through change
- Resistance is natural and must be managed (not forced)
- The project manager plays a key role as a change agent
OCM Process
- Assess — Evaluate organizational culture and change readiness
- Plan — Develop communication, training, and transition plans
- Implement — Execute change activities alongside project work
- Sustain — Reinforce changes, measure adoption, address backsliding
Managing Resistance
- Communicate early and often — People resist what they don't understand
- Involve stakeholders — Participation reduces resistance
- Address concerns — Listen, empathize, provide support
- Celebrate wins — Recognize adoption and progress
- Never use authority alone — Forcing change creates hidden resistance
