Sprint Planning Deep Dive
Complete guide to Sprint Planning for the PMP exam — purpose, participants, inputs, outputs, and time-boxing.
Sprint Planning
Sprint Planning is a Scrum event that initiates each sprint by defining what work can be delivered and how that work will be achieved.
Sprint Planning Structure
- Time-box: Maximum 8 hours for a 1-month sprint (proportionally less for shorter sprints)
- Participants: Entire Scrum Team (Product Owner, Scrum Master, Developers)
Two Key Questions
- What can be done this sprint? — Product Owner presents priority items; team selects based on capacity
- How will the work be done? — Team decomposes items into tasks and creates a plan
Sprint Planning Outputs
- Sprint Goal — A coherent objective for the sprint
- Sprint Backlog — Selected product backlog items + plan for delivering them
PMP Exam Points
- The Product Owner proposes items but the team decides how much to take on
- The sprint goal provides flexibility — items can change if the goal is preserved
- Velocity from previous sprints is used for capacity planning
